Prevention and management of scrap tire fires
With the disposal of an estimated 270 million vehicle tires each year in
the United States, the management of scrap tires has become a major economic
and environmental issue. Although responsible means for disposal, such as recycling,
reuse and energy recovery have become more common, the tire dumps of the last
forty years continue to present environmental and safety hazards that will last
into the foreseeable future.
The fire service has had to confront this problem on an increasingly frequent basis. Over the past several years there has been a sharp increase in the occurrence and severity of scrap tire fires. Current storage regulations are often unheeded, and fire departments are generally ill equipped and untrained in the management of these incidents; this is especially true in rural areas, where many scrap tire piles are located.
